A grand estate on the Burraneer Peninsula, steeped in history, is poised to set a new home sales record for Sutherland Shire.
Wedderburn, at 1 Eurabalong Road, Burraneer, is being sold by David Highland, CEO of Highland Property.
The agency currently holds the Sutherland Shire record of $22.5 million for the sale of 17 Taloombi Street, Cronulla, as well as the Burraneer sales record, of $20 million for 333 Woolooware Road, Burraneer, a waterfront property of just over 2000 square metres.
Wedderburn, which has been held by the same family for more than 70 years, is described as "a grand residential waterfront estate on an extraordinary 5467square metre parcel of land, with DA approval for subdivision into three stratum lots".
Mr Highland said the property presented "a unique and rare opportunity for both developers and residential buyers ", and "a great result is expected".
The land was originally part of the 169 acres of Burraneer Point granted to James Wilson in 1862.
In the early 1900s, it was purchased and subdivided by the Holt Sutherland Estate Co Ltd.
In 1920, five acres were acquired by Marcus William Oldham of Sydney, who commissioned plans for a home by the recently arrived English architect, James Peddle.
Construction of the house, to be named Wedderburn' to honour his wife's family, began shortly after.
Built circa 1920, the home is recorded as being designed and built in a composition of the English "Arts and Crafts" and American "Craftsman" styles, reflective of the architectural forms of the time.
Positioned to capture year-round sunshine and with coastal breezes, Wedderburn has direct deep-water access and exceptional water views.
The agency says the home "captures the enduring craftsmanship of the time on a grand scale from its high-pitched terracotta roof and roughcast render facade to the beautifully preserved timber joinery and intricate leadlight windows".
"At its heart lies the magnificent living hall featuring a large timber-detailed Inglenook fireplace and grand staircase, leading to two upper-level bedrooms, with one opening to a private balcony overlooking the water.
"Wedderburn's eastern side unfolds to a series of terraces, sandstone pathways, and landscaped gardens cascading towards the waterfront, offering an intimate connection to Gunnamatta Bay.
"The property has direct deep-water access, and the original sandstone boatshed sits at the edge of the foreshore.
